In a country made up of thousands of islands, where distance often dictates cost and convenience, e-commerce in the Philippines has long faced unique challenges. As Shopee Philippines marks over a decade of operations in the country, the leading e-commerce platform continues to strengthen its presence in Visayas and Mindanao, making online shopping faster, more accessible, and more reliable for Filipinos outside major urban hubs.
For many Filipino consumers and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), e-commerce has become an everyday part of life. From buying daily essentials to growing home-based businesses, platforms like Shopee have opened new opportunities. However, geographic barriers, long shipping routes and cross-island logistics, have historically limited access for buyers and sellers in VisMin.
Today, that reality is changing. By investing in platform-supported solutions that bring products closer to buyers, Shopee is helping ensure that access is no longer defined by geography. Sellers can now position inventory nearer to their customers, reducing reliance on lengthy inter-island deliveries and improving overall convenience for both sides of the transaction.
A key part of this effort is Fulfilled by Shopee (FBS), which allows sellers to store their products in Shopee-supported facilities. Packing and shipping are managed through Shopee’s ecosystem of third-party logistics partners, taking much of the operational burden off sellers. With fulfillment simplified, sellers can focus on what matters most: improving their products, offering competitive prices, and delivering a more consistent customer experience.
For buyers in Visayas and Mindanao, this translates to better product availability and faster deliveries. Average delivery times for many VisMin orders have improved significantly, dropping from around seven days to just three to four days. This improvement supports more predictable delivery schedules and helps manage costs more effectively for both buyers and sellers.
“Making e-commerce work for the whole country means continuing to build capabilities that serve both buyers and sellers wherever they live,” said Vincent Lee, Head of Shopee Philippines. “Our focus in Visayas and Mindanao builds on years of work to make buying and selling online easier and more reliable, while improving access for communities outside major urban centers.”
Beyond logistics, Shopee continues to support local entrepreneurship and MSME growth. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Filipino sellers have collectively spent over 110,000 hours learning through Shopee University courses, equivalent to more than 12 straight years of training. These programs help entrepreneurs develop practical skills in pricing, marketing, customer service, and day-to-day operations.
Looking ahead, Shopee expects its VisMin operations to support around 1,500 employment opportunities by 2026, spanning platform operations and seller enablement roles. As Shopee enters its next decade in the Philippines, its long-term commitment remains clear: expanding access, supporting livelihoods, and helping e-commerce grow more evenly across the country.
