CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA — Apple has unveiled the new M5 Pro and M5 Max, the latest generation of Apple silicon designed to power the new MacBook Pro and elevate professional computing to new heights. Built using Apple’s new Fusion Architecture, these advanced chips deliver massive improvements in performance, graphics, and AI computing, helping creators, developers, and professionals bring their most ambitious ideas to life faster than ever.

Designed with today’s demanding workflows in mind, the M5 Pro and M5 Max combine two powerful dies into a single system on a chip (SoC). This Apple-designed architecture integrates a high-performance CPU, scalable GPU, Media Engine, unified memory controller, Neural Engine, and Thunderbolt 5 capabilities. The result is a powerful and efficient platform capable of handling complex workloads from 3D animation and software development to large-scale data analysis and AI-driven tasks.

At the heart of both chips is a new 18-core CPU architecture that includes six of Apple’s highest-performing cores, now called super cores, paired with 12 all-new performance cores optimized for efficient multitasking. Together, they deliver up to 30 percent faster performance for professional workloads, enabling users to work seamlessly across multiple intensive tasks such as video editing, simulations, and large datasets.
Graphics performance also gets a major upgrade. The M5 Pro and M5 Max feature a next-generation GPU architecture that scales up to 40 GPU cores, each equipped with a Neural Accelerator to significantly enhance AI processing. With increased unified memory bandwidth and improved GPU compute capabilities, the chips offer more than four times the peak GPU performance for AI workloads compared to the previous generation.

For creative professionals, this translates to faster rendering, smoother visual effects, and enhanced 3D graphics. Apps that use ray tracing can see up to 35 percent better graphics performance, enabling more realistic lighting and detailed visuals for animation, game development, and cinematic production.

“M5 Pro and M5 Max represent a monumental leap forward for Apple silicon,” said Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Technologies. “By leveraging our new Fusion Architecture, we’re able to scale the capabilities of Apple silicon while maintaining our core focus on performance, power efficiency, and unified memory. These chips integrate the world’s fastest CPU cores, a next-generation GPU with Neural Accelerators, and high-bandwidth memory, delivering incredible performance and powerful on-device AI capabilities for MacBook Pro.”

Introducing Apple’s Fusion Architecture
The new Fusion Architecture connects two third-generation 3-nanometer dies into a single SoC through advanced packaging technology with high bandwidth and low latency. This design allows Apple to significantly scale performance while maintaining efficiency.

Each die integrates the CPU, GPU, Media Engine, Neural Engine, unified memory controller, and Thunderbolt 5 connectivity, bringing together multiple advanced technologies within a single powerful system.
Apple’s Fastest CPU Cores Yet
Both chips introduce Apple’s most advanced CPU design to date. The super cores deliver the world’s fastest single-threaded performance thanks to improvements in front-end bandwidth, cache hierarchy, and branch prediction.

Alongside these are new performance cores built for efficient multithreaded workloads. Together, the CPU delivers up to 2.5 times higher multithreaded performance compared to the M1 Pro and M1 Max, allowing MacBook Pro users to tackle demanding professional tasks—from analyzing complex data models to running large-scale simulations with remarkable speed and efficiency.

M5 Pro: Built for High-Performance Creativity
The M5 Pro is designed for professionals who require powerful computing for everyday creative and technical workflows. Whether it’s data modeling, sound design, or academic research, the chip offers a balanced combination of CPU and GPU power.

M5 Pro pairs the 18-core CPU with an up to 20-core GPU, each core equipped with a Neural Accelerator. The chip supports up to 64GB of unified memory and delivers over four times the peak GPU compute performance compared to M4 Pro and more than six times compared to M1 Pro for AI workloads.

With its enhanced shader core, second-generation dynamic caching, and hardware-accelerated mesh shading, M5 Pro boosts graphics performance by up to 20 percent over M4 Pro and 2.2 times over M1 Pro. Apple’s third-generation ray-tracing engine further enhances graphics-intensive applications, delivering up to 35 percent better rendering performance.

M5 Max: Power for the Most Extreme Workloads
For professionals pushing the limits of performance, M5 Max delivers unmatched computing capabilities. Designed for 3D animators, AI researchers, and software developers, it pairs the same 18-core CPU with an up to 40-core GPU, doubling the GPU cores of the M5 Pro.

The chip supports up to 128GB of unified memory and provides a massive 614GB/s memory bandwidth, enabling users to work with complex scenes, massive datasets, and advanced AI models with ease.

Compared to previous generations, M5 Max offers over four times the peak GPU compute performance and more than six times the AI performance of M1 Max. Graphics performance is up to 20 percent faster than M4 Max, while ray-tracing applications can experience up to 30 percent improved rendering performance.

Advanced Technologies Built Into M5 Pro and M5 Max
Both chips integrate several cutting-edge technologies that enhance the MacBook Pro experience:
  • A faster 16-core Neural Engine with improved memory bandwidth for on-device AI and Apple Intelligence features.
  • Apple’s latest Media Engine with hardware acceleration for H.264, HEVC, AV1 decode, and ProRes encode and decode.
  • Memory Integrity Enforcement, an industry-first always-on memory safety protection that maintains performance while enhancing security.
  • Thunderbolt 5 support, with each port powered by its own custom controller integrated directly into the chip.
Designed with the Environment in Mind
Apple continues its commitment to sustainability through Apple 2030, the company’s plan to achieve carbon neutrality across its entire footprint by the end of the decade. The power-efficient performance of M5 Pro and M5 Max helps MacBook Pro meet Apple’s strict energy efficiency standards while reducing the total energy consumed throughout the product’s lifecycle.

With the launch of M5 Pro and M5 Max, Apple once again pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in professional computing, bringing powerful performance, advanced AI capabilities, and energy efficiency together in the next generation of MacBook Pro.
