Jollibee Group Showcases Sustainable Manufacturing and Community Impact at Danao Commissary in Cebu

Sustainability is no longer just a buzzword for the Jollibee Group, it’s built into the very foundations of its operations. This was highlighted at the Danao Commissary in Cebu, where responsible manufacturing, environmental stewardship, and community development come together under the company’s global sustainability agenda, Joy for Tomorrow.

Designed with sustainability at its core, the Danao Commissary demonstrates how large-scale food manufacturing can grow responsibly. Environmental initiatives are integrated directly into daily operations, ensuring that efficiency and care for the planet go hand in hand.
“Designed with sustainability at its core, our Danao Commissary integrates environmental initiatives directly into everyday operations, supporting the Jollibee Group’s commitment to scaling our manufacturing and logistics footprint responsibly,” said Michael T. Ong, President for Manufacturing and Logistics of the Jollibee Group.

One of the facility’s key highlights is its energy system. The Danao Commissary is powered by 99% renewable energy, largely sourced from geothermal power supplied by First Gen and complemented by on-site rooftop solar panels. This shift significantly reduces the facility’s carbon footprint while maintaining a stable and reliable energy supply for its operations.

Water stewardship is another cornerstone of the commissary’s design. The facility features a rainwater collection system that helps reduce dependence on freshwater sources, alongside a dedicated on-site wastewater treatment facility. All wastewater generated is treated to meet required environmental standards before being safely discharged, helping protect local water resources.
In total, 31 sustainability initiatives were incorporated into the Danao Commissary, drawing from proven practices across the Jollibee Group’s manufacturing and logistics network. These efforts align with the Planet pillar of the Joy for Tomorrow agenda, which focuses on waste reduction and improving water and energy efficiency as the business continues to grow.

Beyond environmental responsibility, the Danao Commissary plays a vital role in uplifting the local community. The facility has already generated close to 500 jobs, with over 60% of employees coming from Danao itself. Once fully operational, it is expected to support up to 800 jobs, providing long-term livelihood opportunities for surrounding communities.

Safety and skills development are central to the commissary’s operations. Employees work in a facility designed with strict safety standards, while also gaining exposure to modern manufacturing and logistics practices that build transferable skills and long-term employability.

These efforts are complemented by long-standing programs of the Jollibee Group Foundation in Cebu and nearby areas. The Foundation operates Busog, Lusog, Talino (BLT) Central Kitchens—including facilities in Mandaue City and Danao, that support the Department of Education’s School-Based Feeding Program by providing nutritious meals to undernourished public school students.

The Foundation also runs the Access, Curriculum, and Employability (ACE) Scholarship Program, which supports underprivileged youth in Cebu through technical-vocational and food service–related education. The program equips scholars with industry-relevant skills, opening doors to employment opportunities within the food service and manufacturing sectors.
Through these combined initiatives, the Jollibee Group shows how sustainability can extend beyond infrastructure touching lives, supporting education, and strengthening communities. By integrating environmental responsibility, job creation, and social programs, the Group continues to scale with purpose, delivering long-term value for both the business and the communities it serves.
