iPhone Duo is official: Apple's first foldable is also its thinnest iPhone
Apple has finally entered the foldable market. iPhone Duo, announced at Apple's September 9 event, opens into a 7.6-inch display, closes into a 5.4-inch phone, and starts at $1,999 in the US. Pre-orders open October 16, with the first wave of countries getting it October 23.
Two screens, one aspect ratio
The inner display is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max; the outer display gives you 90 percent of an 18 Pro's screen area in a body that fits in a pocket. Both share the same aspect ratio, so apps scale rather than reflow when you open it. Both are Super Retina XDR with ProMotion, Always On, and 3,000 nits peak brightness. The inner panel gets a nano-texture finish that cuts glare and, Apple says, makes the crease less visible.
Apple Pencil support arrives later this year. Face ID is out; Touch ID lives in the side button.
The build
Grade 5 titanium frame, mirror-polished, with a 3D-printed hinge cover. Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, Ceramic Shield on the back, IP68 water and dust resistance. The hinge uses more than 100 components, and the folding display is sandwiched between glass layers that slide past each other to relieve bend stress. Apple is calling it the thinnest iPhone ever when opened.
Cameras that use the fold
A 48MP Fusion Main and 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide on the back, a Center Stage camera on the cover, and a FaceTime camera hidden under the inner display. The interesting additions are software: Duo Preview shows subjects the live frame on the outer screen, Smart Take auto-captures when the AI detects a pose, and Kid Cue plays Peanuts animations on the outer display to get children looking at the lens. Video tops out at 4K120 Dolby Vision.
A20 Pro, two batteries, eSIM only
Same A20 Pro as the iPhone 18 Pro, built on 2nm, with a vapor chamber bonded directly to the chip package. One battery on each side, rated at up to 31 hours of video on the inner display or 44 on the outer. Fast charging reaches 50 percent in about 20 minutes wired.
Like the iPhone Air before it, iPhone Duo is eSIM-only worldwide. Globe and Smart both support eSIM, so this is a conversion step rather than a dealbreaker, but worth knowing before you order.
iOS 27, reimagined
Split View brings true side-by-side apps to iPhone for the first time. The Dock and Dynamic Island move to the side edge to preserve vertical space, and StandBy now works on either display without a charger. Siri AI ships in beta on September 14, English first.
Pricing and availability
iPhone Duo comes in star white and night sky, in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. US pricing starts at $1,999. The first wave of more than 70 countries includes Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam; the Philippines was not named, and a second wave of 28 countries follows on October 30. Local pricing and dates are still to be confirmed.
On paper, this is the most complete foldable spec sheet on the market. Whether the hinge, the crease, and that dual-battery system hold up to daily use is something we'll only know once we've had one in hand.
