Xiaomi 17T Honest Review: Best Sub-₱40K Leica 5X Telephoto Camera Phone in the Philippines

0
After days of testing the Xiaomi 17T across events, everyday routines, and late-night shoots, here's my honest take on whether this phone actually delivers on its big promise.

The Xiaomi 17T sits in that sweet spot between a true flagship and a mid-ranger — and it knows it. Xiaomi's calling it "The Telephoto Master," and for once, the marketing actually holds up when you use the thing day to day. It's not the cheapest phone around, but it brings a lot of pro-level camera tech down to a price that doesn't make your wallet cry.
Think of it this way: you're getting the same 5x telephoto camera as the more expensive 17T Pro, in a slightly more compact 6.59-inch body, at almost ₱12,000 less. That's the deal.
Design & build
The 17T doesn't look like a budget phone. The brushed and polished rear panels catch the light in a way that's more "premium watch" than "mid-range smartphone." It comes in three colorways — Black, Violet, and Opal White — and at 8.2mm thin and 200g, it sits well in the hand without feeling hollow. IP68 water and dust resistance is here too, which matters a lot when you're out using your phone or basically taking photos at events or traveling.

The one compromise: it uses a plastic frame instead of metal. You won't really notice it in daily use, but it's worth knowing.
The display
One of the best screens I've used at this price. It's a 6.59-inch AMOLED panel running at 120Hz, with 12-bit color depth and Dolby Vision support — which means colors are exceptionally accurate and content looks gorgeous, whether you're scrolling through feeds, reviewing shots, or binge-watching. Peak brightness hits 3,500 nits, so outdoor use is a non-issue even in Manila heat.
Cameras — the main event
  • Main: 50MP · f/1.7 | Light Fusion 800 · 1/1.55" sensor · OIS · great in daylight and decent at night
  • Telephoto: 50MP · 5x optical  |  115mm Leica lens · OIS · 10x lossless · up to 120x AI zoom · macro at 30cm
  • Ultrawide: 13MP · f/2.2  | 120° field of view · fixed focus · solid for landscapes, just not the star of the show
  • Selfie: 32MP · f/2.2  |  No autofocus — group shots can miss sharpness, but portrait mode and AI processing cover it well
The telephoto is genuinely transformative for event coverage or just regular photography stuff. Being able to shoot at 5x optical zoom — and stay sharp at 10x — means I'm capturing stage moments, product close-ups, and crowd shots that would have been impossible with a standard camera phone. The Leica tuning adds a natural, film-like rendering that's hard to describe but immediately noticeable in the final output.

Here are some test shots.

Performance & everyday use
Powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8500 Ultra — not the latest flagship chip, but more than capable for everything most people actually do. Switching apps, editing photos, streaming 4K content, even gaming — it all runs smoothly without heating up. The 3D IceLoop cooling system keeps the temperature in check, and with 12GB of RAM, multitasking is genuinely seamless.

Software is HyperOS 3 on Android 16. It takes clear design cues from iOS — the lock screen, quick settings, and the Dynamic Island-style Hyper Island feature all feel familiar. If you've used a Xiaomi phone before, you'll settle right in. AI features exist but stay out of the way — subtitle generation, search, writing tools — nothing gimmicky.
Battery & charging
The 6,500mAh battery is a genuine strength. Light to moderate use easily gets you through a full day, often with a chunk left over. Heavy users — lots of camera, gaming, and hotspot — will want to plug in before bed. That's fair for a phone this feature-packed.

The charging story, though, has a catch. 67W wired charging sounds fast, but you need a proper PPS-compatible charger to hit those speeds — and one doesn't come in the box. Using a standard fast charger, expect about 95 minutes for a full charge. And there's no wireless charging at all, which is notable in 2026. It's the most honest thing I can tell you: battery life is great, charging is just okay.

Final verdict
The Xiaomi 17T earns its "Telephoto Master" tagline — the 5x Leica periscope zoom is a genuine differentiator at this price, not just a spec on paper. Pair that with a flagship-grade display, a large battery, and smooth everyday performance, and you have one of the most well-rounded phones under ₱40K right now.

Just go in knowing what you're trading: no wireless charging, no metal frame. If those don't bother you — and for most people, they won't — this phone is an easy recommendation, especially if you shoot a lot of content or cover events where distance is your biggest challenge.
