Filipino stories continue to make their mark on the global stage, and this time, one of the country's most critically acclaimed films is set to reach even more audiences around the world.
"Sunshine," the latest film by acclaimed Filipino director Antoinette Jadaone, has been selected as one of the inaugural titles under Alternativa Distribution, a newly launched nonprofit film distribution label supported by global mobility platform inDrive. The initiative aims to amplify meaningful stories from the Global South and connect them with audiences worldwide.
The coming-of-age drama follows a young gymnast navigating an unplanned pregnancy, offering an honest and thought-provoking look at women's reproductive rights in the Philippines. Its compelling storytelling and social relevance made it a natural fit for Alternativa Distribution's mission of championing films that spark important conversations.
Through the partnership, "Sunshine" will gain wider international exposure through licensing opportunities across streaming platforms, television broadcasters, in-flight entertainment services, and educational institutions around the world.
"We selected Sunshine as part of our inaugural film lineup as it sparked meaningful conversations about women's reproductive rights in a conservative country like the Philippines," said Avital Lavi, Head of Distribution at Alternativa Distribution. Beyond global distribution, Alternativa Distribution provides independent filmmakers with upfront minimum guarantees, revenue-sharing opportunities from licensing agreements, and comprehensive distribution support that includes subtitling, dubbing, translation, and localized marketing for different territories.
Championing Stories That Matter
"Sunshine" joins nine other acclaimed films from Colombia, Brazil, India, Bangladesh, Mongolia, China, Iran, Mexico, and Georgia in Alternativa Distribution's first international catalog. Many of these films have already earned recognition at prestigious festivals including the Alternativa Film Festival, Cannes, Berlinale, CPH:DOX, and the Toronto International Film Festival.
The inaugural lineup also includes 9-Month Contract, After the Rain, A Poet, Being Olimpia, Bird of a Different Feather, Grand Me, If Only I Could Hibernate, Saba, and The Nature of Invisible Things.
Together, these films will serve as the foundation of Alternativa Distribution's growing catalog of socially relevant cinema, with distribution plans spanning Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East, while expansion efforts are also underway for Europe, North America, and Oceania.
According to Lavi, many exceptional films from the Global South continue to struggle to find international audiences despite their artistic excellence and cultural importance. Through accessible licensing, fair business practices, and localization support, Alternativa Distribution hopes to remove those barriers and help meaningful stories inspire conversations across cultures.
The organization continues to source new titles through international film scouts, industry partnerships, and direct submissions. It is also preparing for the 4th Alternativa Film Festival, scheduled for 2027, with additional details expected to be announced in the coming months.
For inDrive, the launch of Alternativa Distribution marks its first venture into the international film industry. Beyond mobility services, the company continues to expand its impact-driven initiatives, supporting underrepresented communities through programs such as the Aurora Tech Award for women in technology and Supernovas, a program supporting children's football teams.
