Sony unveils Project Defiant, its first-ever wireless fight stick designed for PS5 and PC. With ultra-low latency, custom controls, and PlayStation Link tech, this controller is built for serious fighting game fans.
Sony Interactive Entertainment is stepping into the arena with a bold new controller built specifically for fighting game fans. Codenamed Project Defiant, this is the company’s first-ever wireless fight stick designed for both PS5 and PC. With a combination of wireless freedom, fast response time, and custom-built controls, Project Defiant offers a new way for players to enjoy competitive gaming at home or on the go.
One of the standout features of Project Defiant is its wireless connectivity powered by PlayStation Link technology. This allows for ultra-low latency response, giving players that split-second accuracy needed for combos and timed attacks in fighting games. And for those who prefer a wired setup, a USB-C option is available, letting players switch easily between wireless and wired play.
What makes this controller especially appealing is its custom-designed digital stick, made specifically with fighting games in mind. Players can easily swap out restrictor gates—square, circle, or octagon—without tools. This gives players more control over how their movements register, offering a tailored experience based on their personal playstyle. The stick, paired with mechanical switch buttons, provides a tactile and responsive feel during matches. The layout includes familiar PlayStation buttons like Square, Triangle, X, and Circle, along with shoulder buttons R1, R2, L1, and L2. A built-in touch pad, similar to the DualSense controller, brings added functionality for PS5 players.
The design of Project Defiant is eye-catching and practical. The surface is split into two colors—black on the left, where the stick is located, and white on the right, where the action buttons sit. This color split not only looks modern but also helps differentiate key input zones during play. Across the top, players will find various controls including the PS Button, Share Button, Lever Mode Switch, Lock Button, and the PlayStation Link button, as well as L3, R3, the touch pad, and Options.
Portability hasn’t been overlooked either. Project Defiant comes with a sleek sling-style carrying case, designed to protect the stick and other components when you're on the move. The case even includes a special lever gap, keeping the digital stick safe and secure during transport. Inside the controller, there’s a storage compartment for your restrictor gates and the PlayStation Link USB adapter, keeping everything in one place.
Another convenient touch is the wireless wake feature. By simply pressing and holding the PS button, users can turn on their PS5 without needing to touch the console—perfect for players who want to jump straight into the action.
Sony has confirmed that Project Defiant is scheduled to launch in 2026, though the final product name and exact release date are still under wraps. As anticipation builds, it’s clear this controller is set to be a game-changer for fighting game enthusiasts who want flexibility, speed, and a pro-level experience.
Stay tuned for more updates on Project Defiant as Sony reveals more in the coming months.
