Australian refill store Scoop Wholefoods has opened its first Philippine branch at Power Plant Mall in Rockwell, Makati, together with its personal care arm, Scoop Whole Beauty. The concept is simple: no fixed pack sizes. Shoppers buy pantry staples, beauty products and personal care essentials by weight, in exactly the amount they need, using their own containers or the store's recyclable paper bags.
The local opening is brought in by Healthy Options Group, and the launch was attended by founders Jeremy and Bettina Kirk, Scoop Whole Beauty founder Daisy Clasper, Healthy Options Group president Christian Tan and managing director Romy Sia, along with representatives from Rockwell Land and the Australian Embassy.
From Sydney to Rockwell
Scoop was founded in Sydney in 2013, inspired by the traditional markets of Malta, and now has more than 20 locations worldwide. Sia noted that Filipinos already know the value of buying in custom portions, and that Scoop turns that familiar practice into a zero-waste routine.
The pay-by-weight model cuts packaging waste, but it also helps with budgeting and freshness. Whether it's a pinch of a specialty spice for one recipe or a week's worth of staples, shoppers take home only what they'll use, so less ends up forgotten at the back of the pantry.
What's on the shelves
Expect organic whole foods, natural treats and pantry staples, plus Australian crowd favorites such as Byron Bay chocolate-coated fruits and nuts and freshly prepared granolas and mueslis. The Manila store also carries local products, starting with rice from Family Farms and probiotic kombucha on tap from Brye and Brew, with plans to bring in more Filipino farmers, artisans and makers.
The beauty side
Scoop Whole Beauty applies the same refill idea to self-care. Its range is 100% vegan, palm-oil-free and toxin-free, made with ethically sourced, earth-based ingredients. Liquid soaps, face masks and body oils are sold by weight, alongside solid shampoo bars, compostable beauty tools, and natural deodorants, face washes and lip balms in fully compostable packaging.
Its mineral makeup line is designed to be lightweight and breathable for humid weather, with tones made for Filipino skin. Palettes use refillable, plastic-free pans, so a single shade can be replaced without throwing out the whole compact.
How it works
Bring clean containers from home or use the paper bags in store. Containers are weighed empty at the counter first so you pay only for the contents. Then fill up at your own pace and pay by weight at the register.
