HONOR Philippines kicks off the year with an adrenaline-fueled statement as it introduces the HONOR X9d 5G, its toughest mid-range smartphone yet. Designed for real-life mishaps and extreme scenarios alike, the newest addition to the HONOR X Series proves that durability doesn’t have to come at the expense of everyday performance.
HONOR has become known in the Philippines for pushing smartphone durability to the limit. Since the debut of the HONOR X9a 5G in 2023, famously dropped from five feet, the brand has consistently raised the bar. The HONOR X9b 5G survived a jaw-dropping 50-foot drop, while the HONOR X9c 5G made headlines in January 2025 with its helicopter drop test and Guinness World Records title for “The Most People Performing a Mobile Phone Drop Test Simultaneously.”
Now, HONOR is taking toughness to new heights, literally.
To showcase the next evolution of durability, the HONOR X9d 5G was subjected to its most extreme test yet: a high-altitude drop from an ultralight plane, with no protective case and no margin for error.
“Year after year, our fans challenge us to go beyond expectations,” said Stephen Cheng, Vice President of HONOR Philippines. “The HONOR X9d 5G was built with Filipino users in mind—combining toughness, innovation, and value. These extreme tests reflect our confidence that this phone can handle real-life challenges.”
For transparency and credibility, HONOR partnered with Gadget Pilipinas Editor-in-Chief Gian Viterbo, who personally took on the challenge by releasing the device from an ultralight plane traveling at 60 kilometers per hour.
“I said yes as a consumer,” shared Viterbo. “I knew the risks, and I genuinely wanted to see if the HONOR X9d 5G would survive.”
The experience, according to Viterbo, was nothing short of exhilarating—and historic for the tech industry. While he initially expected the phone to be completely unusable, what surprised him most was not just its physical resilience, but its ability to keep data intact despite the extreme conditions.
“For me, durability meant two things,” he explained. “It’s strong enough to survive the harshest environments, and even if it gets damaged, it’s durable enough to protect what matters—your files. That’s true durability.”
