Spotify’s AI DJ feature is getting a major upgrade by letting Premium users make voice requests.
Spotify has just taken another big step in personalizing how we discover and enjoy music. Its AI-powered DJ feature, known simply as “DJ,” is now more interactive than ever. Premium users in over 60 markets can now use their voice to make music requests in real time—whether you’re in the mood for something chill or looking for high-energy tracks to boost your day.
This upgrade to Spotify DJ is a direct response to what users have been asking for: more control and deeper engagement with their listening sessions. The DJ experience was already popular, with engagement nearly doubling over the past year. People love using DJ at the gym, while working from home, or just relaxing. It’s like having a personal music expert who knows your taste and always picks something just right.
Now, with voice requests, the feature becomes more than just a playlist generator—it becomes a conversation. You can ask DJ to play music that fits a certain mood, activity, or genre. Say something like, “Play me some throwback R&B,” or “Give me indie songs I’ve never heard before,” and DJ will respond with a mix based on your listening history and Spotify’s global editorial insights. You can even get a little playful and ask for something like, “Cry-in-the-car songs”—and DJ will get it.
One of the standout aspects of this feature is the voice and personality behind DJ, modeled after Spotify’s Xavier “X” Jernigan. DJ X has a friendly, familiar voice that makes the experience feel more human and less robotic. And now, it’s a two-way street. You don’t just listen—you interact.
To use the new DJ requests feature, just head to the search tab in Spotify and type in “DJ.” Press play to start a curated session, then press and hold the DJ button in the bottom right corner of the screen. When you hear the beep, you can speak your request. DJ will instantly adjust the music based on what you asked for, using a blend of your past listening habits and real-time preferences.
If you want to switch things up but don’t know what to ask, a simple tap of the DJ button will skip to a new vibe. And if you’re feeling experimental, just hold the button and make a new request. It’s worth noting that this feature is still in beta, so it’s focused on music only—no podcasts or audiobooks just yet.
Spotify’s DJ is evolving into something more than just an algorithm—it’s a personalized music companion. This update makes it easier to discover new artists, revisit old favorites, and enjoy music that matches your moment. Whether you’re hosting a party, focusing at work, or going through a late-night drive, DJ can keep up.
So go ahead, speak up, and let DJ guide your next music session. The future of streaming is more personal—and it’s already here.
