Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila Honors Mothers and Fathers

I was fortunate enough to be invited by Sofitel for the launch of their Mother's Day and Father's Day celebration. Sofitel's Spiral Buffet has been 'the' destination of these yearly traditions. This year, Spiral takes us to an exciting epicurean collaboration treat featuring beloved household dishes by celebrity moms and dads.

Featured celebrity moms Lotlot De Leon, Janice de Belen and Marjorie Barretto collaborated with Spiral’s culinary artisans to bring its customers amazing household favorites. These favorite family recipes that star in the meals in the de Leon, de Belen and Barretto households can now be enjoyed as a selection at Spiral this Mother's Day Weekend. 

LOTLOT DE LEON
A famous member of the hit variety show That’s Entertainment, Lotlot de Leon has grown from teen celebrity favorite to a seasoned actress and hardworking mother of four. Despite the demands of her television program commitments, Lotlot makes sure she spends time with her children. Lotlot was raised in a family-centered household. She imparts the same values with her children and nurtures them with time and makes it a point that they would go out on weekends to try different culinary offerings in the metro.

Lotlot showcased favorite home-made dishes and launched “Lotlot Homemade” which features Filipino specialty dishes such as Bopis, Bicol Express and Dulong in Olive Oil. Her children Janine, Jessica, Diego and Max are her number one fans that constantly crave for her Four-Cheese Lasagna, Grilled Chicken Breast, Gyudon and Sukiyaki. Her youngest daughter Max shares her passion for cooking and would join her in the kitchen as they explore new dishes to be shared by the family.

JANICE DE BELEN
She wasn't present during the event but her three daughters were present. Multi-award winning actress and mother of five, Janice de Belen started in the film and television industry at the age of 9. On top of starring in consecutive projects in film and television, Janice loves to cook and pursued this passion by taking Culinary Arts at the Center for Asian Culinary Studies. Janice’s love for cooking inspired her eldest son, Luigi to become a chef. An extension to her passion for cooking, Janice launched her home-based business, “Food Biz” featuring bestsellers such as Callos, Roasted Chicken and Cheese Cupcakes.
Her passion for cooking is greatly appreciated by the family. Among the children’s favorites are Tuna and Green Apple Pasta, Paella with Squid Ink, Tuna Carpaccio, Callos and Truffle, Arugula and Mushroom Pasta. Holidays prove to be special to the family as this gives them an opportunity to pause from the demands of their schedules and enjoy family gatherings. “My kids and I cook together especially during the holidays like New Year or Thanksgiving.”

MARJORIE BARRETTO
As an actress and former public servant, Marjorie Barretto has mastered the fine art of balanced living. Managing her commitments for television, serving the people of Caloocan and spending quality time with her children: Dani, Julia, Claudia and Leon are among the many things that keep Marjorie engaged. The middle child from the renowned Barretto sisters, Marjorie is a hands-on mom who loves to cook for her children. She frequently prepares recipes that she’s learned from her own mother, Mrs. Estrella Castelo Barretto.
With the love for the culinary arts being passed from one generation to another, Marjorie’s children frequently watch and learn while she’s behind the counter. “I teach my children to cook. I would like each of them to learn a specific specialty so that whenever we have a family get-together, each of them would have their own dish to contribute.”

On May 8 at Spiral, those who will celebrate at Sofitel will have the chance to have their photo taken with mom in Sofitel's Mother's Day photo booth. Diners will also be serenaded by the acapella group Band of Brothers. Tables will be decorated with a special table centerpiece featuring a photo of your child and a flower from Botanicals. 
Children are in for an exciting chocolate treat as they prepare sweet gifts at the Chocolate Atelier for their beloved moms. Artisan Pierre Marmonier will present how to prepare his special homemade jam with floral tea and give a special taste of home. Receive a luxurious pampering session courtesy of Nail Artisan and Le Spa and get a chance to win special prizes from our partners.

Spiral also gave salute to the man of the house. On June 19, Spiral will be presenting enchanted brunch selections for dads on Father's day Weekend. Celebrity dad and restaurateur Rob Pengson, Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila’s General Manager Adam Laker, and Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila’s Director of Food and Beverage Damien Marchenay whip up favorite household dishes in collaboration with Spiral culinary artisans.

ROB PENGSON - A restaurateur and doting father to his two sons, Rob Pengson is the pillar of the household and a celebrated name in the metro’s contemporary food industry. Rob studied at the California Culinary Academy and trained at the Mandarin Oriental in San Francisco. He is the co-founder and CEO of the culinary school Global Academy and owns dining venues including The Hungry Hound gastropub and the cocktail bar, Niner Ichi Nana. 


At home, Chef Rob is father first and chef second. He dotes on his family by spoiling them with favorite family dishes and incorporates healthy elements in his creations. Among the features dishes he prepares for his sons Santiago and Sebastian is Tinolang Isda with Malunggay. 

Forming a formidable tag team with wife and Pastry Chef Sunshine Pengson, they bake sweet treats for the boys with the young ones adding color to the batter as the finishing touch. From dad and chef to his sons Chef Rob is looking forward to passing on his culinary learnings and introducing the haven that he has come to know and love – the kitchen.
On Father's Day, June 19 at Spiral, Dads will be treated with a special Negroni, a welcome drink and a chance to win special prizes including an Ultralight Flying Lesson in Angeles City Flying Club and gift items from Kiehl’s and Jack Nickalus.
