CONTAGION: Movie Review

By September 09, 2011 , , , , , , , , , , ,

Attended a press screening of the movie without doing any research nor watch any trailers just to see where it takes me. Contagion is not your usual suspense / scary movie. It's different. It is realistic in a way how virus spread across the world. Really an all star cast, to notch Oscar winners, from the director Steven Soderbergh to the actors Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Marion Cotillard. Included also are Oscar nominees Jude Law and Laurence Fishburne.
This movie doesn't need and fancy special effects of CGI. not about floods, fire nor earthquakes. The movie follows the rapid progress of a lethal airborne virus that kills within days, leaving the medical community scrambling to find the source and cure to the virus. In the process, People from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) were assigned on different places to do their own investigation.

Matt Damon in ContagionThe movie is kind of frightening because it is realistic. Watching the movie progresses disturbs the living hell out of me that what I was holding currently while watching might be all dirty and all. Ha Ha. It did made me stop eating my sandwich. Anyways, I love Sodebergh's way in telling the story and arranging the scenes together with out giving too much, just right. I will not give much, but I want you to watch it. He He.

Laurence Fishburne and Kate Winslet in ContagionThe movie is quiet and the Oscars maybe knocking on their door now. I do love the performance of Matt Damon here who played as an effective bereaved and worn out looking father. The Director checks up with him from time to time on different parts of the movie to balance out and to get a view on their side of the whole fiasco. Matt's wife in the movie, Gwyneth Paltrow didn't get to share much on scenes during the frenzy but she did well herself.  The virus seekers Laurence Fishhburne and Jennifer Ehle are just some of the researchers pursuing treatment to the global epidemic. They also show a a face of how the US government would react to situations like these.

The movie shows just how the public would react on these times. The lawless panic in the city, like the robbing, looting, rioting is highly plausible  considering the situation they were in.  One character there I liked is Jude Law's. A hungry 'freelance journalist blogger' which keeps the whole situation viral and somehow helping (unintentionally?) spread the fear.

The movie reminds us that disaster and situations like these happens everywhere. The food, the air, the water and just simple interactions. The movie doesn't swing axes or spits out blood but there were some desperation feel and scenes in the movie. It may not spit fire, but maintains a low-key pace and feel. I feel there were some scenes that i lacked follow up stories but maybe it's just me. Again, i say that it feels real because the movie portrayed just how the public and media would react to these types of situation

Contagion is a movie worth paying for. Finally some realistic pandemic movie. No Zombies here. Movie had nice editing and nice direction. oh and I love the soundtrack.
